About Us

Formed in 1992, NAKMAS (National Association of Karate and Martial Art Schools) is Britain's only independent National Governing Body for both traditional and modern martial arts. This is compensated for by the participation of 20% adults and 80% youngsters from diverse backgrounds who practise various martial arts.

NAKMAS encourages adults and children, both able-bodied and impaired, to participate in martial arts, with a special interest and expertise in individuals on the autistic spectrum. Autism has affected two key members of the NAKMAS National Management Committee.

The British Standards Institution has certified and accredited NAKMAS to the International Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2015) as well as the government-recognised Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport.

The organisation takes equality and quality concerns very seriously, and it has a highly effective Welfare Policy that was designed with the NSPCC's aid.
